Design Concept
I designed an elegant and environmentally friendly home for The Millers in New Orleans, inspired by their shared passion for luxurious libraries. Mr. and Mrs. Miller first connected in a library and have since cherished their experiences in sophisticated reading spaces. Their love for the calming and graceful ambiance of elegant libraries will serve as the cornerstone of this design. The home will feature a spacious and symmetrical layout, characterized by geometric shapes and classical proportions that reflect the timeless beauty of Georgian architecture. This design choice not only aligns with the Millers' refined aesthetic but also complements Mr. Miller's collection of vintage books, evoking a sense of nostalgia.
The design will emphasize multifunctional spaces, allowing the home to adapt to the evolving needs of the Miller family. Incorporating accessibility features is essential; we will ensure that Mrs. Miller’s 75-year-old mother can navigate the home comfortably and safely in her wheelchair. I will do this by creating a one story home with an open layout; the open layout will include wide hallways and spacious rooms. This will also be beneficial for the Millers' so their children can grow and adapt over time in a flexible environment. Additionally, Mrs. Miller’s passion for gardening will be celebrated with designated spaces for her plants and a yard big enough for all of Mrs. Miller's gardening needs, offering her relaxation and fulfillment.
Inspired by the elegance of libraries, the interiors will showcase organized design elements, including classical proportions, graceful entryways, and a neutral color palette including pastels and florals. I will prioritize sustainability in the home by using recycled materials and adding smart home features. This approach will create a harmonious and aesthetically pleasing environment that prioritizes sustainability and reflects the Millers’ love for Georgian style.
My goal is to create a home that combines elegance, functionality, and sustainability, inspired by their love for luxurious libraries. The design features a Georgian-inspired, symmetrical layout that reflects library elegance with classical elements and prioritizes sustainability. This will offer the Millers a space that is perfectly suited to their unique lifestyle and interests.
The materials and finishes throughout the home were chosen with a strong emphasis on sustainability and timelessness. I selected eco-friendly finishes, such as reclaimed wood, natural stone, and low-VOC paints, ensuring that the home would not only be beautiful but also environmentally conscious. The use of recycled glass and sustainable hardwoods for flooring further aligns with the project’s commitment to eco-friendly practices. The color palette will include soft, neutral tones with pastel accents, feature dark rich undertones, and incorporate florals to bring warmth and life to the spaces while maintaining an elegant and calming environment.
Overall, the selected FF&E and materials reflect the home’s commitment to timeless elegance, functionality, and sustainability, creating a sophisticated yet adaptable space that caters to the Millers’ lifestyle and passions.
Client Profile
Design Process
To ensure the design for the Miller family’s home was aligned with their passions and needs, I carefully selected the FF&E as well as materials and finishes that would enhance both the elegance and functionality of their living spaces.
In selecting the furniture and design elements for the home, I focused on creating spaces that reflect the refined elegance of a library while enhancing the overall functionality of the layout. The furniture is carefully chosen to strike a balance between luxurious comfort and practical use, with vintage-inspired seating reminiscent of classic library lounges. The design embraces timeless, elegant details like wood paneling, golden accent features and classic proportions, which are carried throughout the home to create a seamless flow between spaces. These design choices enhance the symmetry and balance of the Georgian-inspired layout, allowing for multifunctional areas that serve the evolving needs of the Miller family while preserving a calm and sophisticated atmosphere throughout. The strategic use of lighting and thoughtful material choices further enhance the home’s elegant, library-inspired ambiance, ensuring that each room offers both relaxation and purpose.
FLOOR PLAN
The development of the floor plan for the Millers’ home focused on creating a traditional Georgian-style design, which is known for its symmetry, formal rooms, and classical proportions. The home features clearly defined spaces such as a formal living room, dining room, and a library/study, all designed to maintain balance and elegance. The library, inspired by the Millers’ love for books, will be a central feature, with built-in bookshelves, large windows, and a serene atmosphere.
The floor plan incorporates classic Georgian elements like tall windows, crown moldings, and elegant entryways, giving the home a stately yet inviting feel. Each room is carefully proportioned to reflect traditional design while providing practical spaces for the family, such as a dedicated homeschooling area for the children and flexible rooms that can adapt as the family’s needs change.
To ensure accessibility for Mrs. Miller’s 75-year-old mother, the design includes wide hallways and doorways, while maintaining the formal, structured layout typical of Georgian homes. The outdoor spaces were designed with Mrs. Miller’s gardening passion in mind, offering a spacious area that is also easy to navigate.
Sustainability was also prioritized while still reflecting the Millers' love for traditional design. The final floor plan blends the elegance of Georgian architecture with functionality, creating a home that suits the family’s lifestyle and values.
